We share stories and give advice

1.  Chicago Cubs Stretching on the Beach!

William Wrigley Jr.’s bought Catalina in 1919 and later gained a controlling interest in the Cubs during 1921. The Wrigley Field on Catalina Island predates the Los Angeles minor league baseball facility of the same name, which didn’t open until 1925. It is technically the first baseball facility to bear Wrigley’s name. The famous Chicago ballpark was first known as Weeghman Park. It was later called Cubs Park and then was renamed Wrigley Field in 1926.

Catalina Island

If you haven’t been to Catalina Island recently, then you just haven’t been to Catalina. The Island has undergone an extreme makeover in the past few years adding attractions that rival the world’s best destinations. Descanso Beach Club is a well-noted area of interest that has become one of California’s premier beach hangouts. In September of each year the Descanso Beach Club hosts the World Famous, “Catalina Wine Mixer,” providing live entertainment and activities. The Event has been sold out every year since opening with Hollywood Elites and average beach goers in attendance.

Last year saw the launch of Catalina Island Flyboarding! The newest activity to Avalon reopens soon providing visitors the opportunity to put on a snowboard-like mechanism that is powered by JetSki water propulsion. The result: An awesome adventure that allows guests to hover above the water and fly around like something out of the future!

Catalina Island Oar Fish Found Pebbly Beach

During an expedition out to Pebbly Beach on Catalina Island this morning, I was able to discover the presence of a 15 foot Catalina Island Oar Fish watched ashore.  It appears its tail had been severed, possibly by a passing boat’s propeller, which may have led to its untimely death.  It’s very rare to find a Catalina Island Oar Fish washed ashore; however, it seems now to be a common occurrence on Catalina Island these days.  If you recall, there was a famous photo taken out at Toyon Bay featuring an 18-Foot Oar Fish discovered in October of 2013 by Marine Science Instructor Jasmine Santana.  Toyon Bay is just a few miles down the coast from where this particular Catalina Island Oar Fish was discovered.

Catalina Island Black Sea Bass Also Found!

While standing there admiring the sheer size of the Catalina Island Oar Fish, I noticed a Harbor Patrol boat towing something in the water that appeared to be a sea lion; however, as it go closer to shore I noticed it was, in fact, a gigantic Black Sea Bass.  What are the odds of not only one but two rare fish showing up dead on a small beach on Catalina Island?  We are still unsure of the actual cause of death in both situations, but it appears that the Black Sea Bass may have been a failed catch-and-release.  Be sure to read Captain John King’s article on the proper release of a Black Sea Bass.  Many times visitors to Catalina Island can very rarely catch a Black Sea Bass and are unfamiliar with the proper way to resuscitate the species; however, following the advice of legendary sea Captain John King you’ll do just fine.

An interesting day on Catalina Island for marine biologists!  This is the third time that an Oar Fish has washed ashore on Catalina Island in recent years at is beginning to puzzle locals and scientists alike.  No one has yet to provide a definitive explanation as to what is causing the high number of beachings.

Descanso Beach BBQ featuring Chef Kapo

Tonight is Descanso Beach BBQ featuring Chef Kapo Kealoha of the Santa Catalina Island Company!  We are excited to see the return of the Descanso Beach BBQ featuring Chef Kapo @ Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island and give a special shout out to Ben Villalobos (the Beach Club’s Manager) for his willingness to bring back not only the BBQ but also to offer new events such as the summer Castaway Series.  Tonight is going to be a Hawaiian themed event and Tour Catalina is excited to take part since our owners are not only cousins of Chef Kapo but are natives of the Islands of Hawaii.  We love Hawaiian food and hope to see some of our traditional items from our upbringing on the menu.  Obviously it’s going to be hard for something like Poi to show up all the way from Hawaii considering there are no farmers in California who produce it, but if it happens I’ll be happy.  I can’t wait to see what Chef Kapo comes up with.  The night is going to have live music by a local talented graduate of Avalon high.  If you don’t know Christian then come down to listen to  his awesome music.  It’s going to be a night for the books.  Be sure to check below to find out more information on what’s going on and how to take part.

Descanso Beach BBQ featuring Chef Kapo Event Details

The event is taking place tonight from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM; no reservations are required but available if you wish; the cost is $28-$34 per plate; there will be a full-bar open for drink purchases; it is a Hawaiian themed menu (and Chef Kapo didn’t even let us know everything that’s on it).  Hope to see every one there!  It is Tour Catalina’s Thursday August 13th, 2015 “PLACE TO BE ON CATALINA ISLAND!”  #tourcatalina, #catalinaisland, #descansobeachclub, #chefkapo

Patrick Alexander Interview President Tour Catalina

Patrick Alexander Interview President Tour Catalina excerpt: The Company emerged this year as an offspring of the world famous Original Ghost Tours of Catalina as a parent organization focused on providing destination travel services.  The stated goal of is to contribute to the growing Catalina tourism industry by providing small, local tour operators the ability to market and, more importantly, sell their products online.  The “Patrick Alexander Interview President Tour Catalina” goes a bit more in depth on the subject in the follow Q and A session.

Follow the Tour Catalina Island Questions Below

Question:  “What is the goal of Tour Catalina?”
Alexander states, “Many of the smaller tour operators on the island, ourselves included, have had a difficult time paying for online marketing efforts.  By aggregating these operators together we can aggressively target the Los Angeles tourism market with the ultimate goal of selling packages to Catalina Island that include these smaller companies.”
Question:  “What do you see for the future?”
Alexander states, “Tour Catalina’s hope for the future is to expose Catalina Island as a hot spot destination that is accessible not only to the Los Angeles market but markets beyond.  For years Catalina Island has received great media attention yet there has been many first time visitors to the island who live in nearby cities such as Long Beach and Anaheim.  The retention of these clients that live within a 100 mile radius will be the key to ensuring continued growth in the upcoming years; however, utilizing access to the main global distribution systems will allow to create packages for customers all over the United States and even the world.  By connecting air, helicopter, boat, rentals, tours, activities etc together, we can engage a much larger audience.”
Question:  “How does your company stand apart?”
He continues, “We are focused on organic growth; meaning we want to be able to control, modify, update, and adjust our operations internally.  By creating a strong team that has the ability to compliment one another in the pursuit of our overall objectives, we will be able to execute upon our business goals and expand customer accessibility.  We look forward to each new day and opportunities.”
It looks like there are a few hurdles ahead, but nonetheless it appears to be full steam for Tour Catalina.  Be sure to check out the new offerings the company has to offer.
